Congratulations to Tavares Restaurant for a Michelin Star

After being nominated for one of the 100 contemporary Chefs by ten of the best Chefs in the world, the young Portuguese José Avillez and his crew are now celebrating the Michelin Star Tavares Restaurant has just received.

Tavares Restaurant

Just about a month ago, 10 of the best chefs in the world made a selection of their own personal choice for 10 contemporary Chefs to keep in mind – Ferrán Adriá (from El Bulli, Cataluña), Mario Batali (Babbo Ristorante and Enoteca, New York), Shannon Bennett (Vue de monde, Melbourne), Alain Ducasse (Le Louis XV, Mónaco), Fergus Henderson (St John, London), Yoshihiro Murata (Kikunoi Kiamachi, Quioto), Gordon Ramsay (Gordon Ramsay, London), Rene Redzepi (Noma, Copenhagen), Alice Walters (Chez Panisse, San Francisco) e Jacky Yu (Xi Yan Sweets, Wanchai). Ferrán Adriá, considered by many the best in the world, placed José Avillez (from Tavares Restaurant) on his list. He justified himself saying: “José is on my list because only 5 years ago it was difficult for me to imagine that Portugal could ever give the haute cousine world an important contribute”.

Last week, José Avillez was brought again to the news when Tavares, the oldest restaurant in Lisbon that is under his guidance since 2008, received a Michelin Star. Not to much surprise, I must say. For José Aville himself, this is the first step for a second star. To Lisbon, though, this is am important step in its gastronomy history. José Avillez is the only Portuguese Chef in Lisbon with a Michelin Star and its meaning is conclusive – not only this is one of Portuguese best restaurants but also a world’s best.

At Tavares, the Chef presents his highly creative haut cuisine interpretation to contemporary Portuguese culinary. The results are outstanding with perfect symbioses of tastes and textures and superb presentation. Like I said before (in my review), this is one place you shouldn’t miss… if you can afford it, that is.

Tavares, Rua da Misericórdia, 35 (map)

Average meal: € 85
