More London chocolate

I was amused to see a book in a second hand shop the other day entitled ‘Better than Sex’. Right, I thought, I know exactly what that’s about. (To my great surprise, though, it wasn’t about chocolate.  Must have been written by a man!)

I’ve been trying to find chocolate that really is better than sex (or at least nearly as good!) for quite a long time and I think William Curley is getting there.

These are not Ritz-Tea style chocolates – you know, lots and lots of cream, chocolate, obvious flavours. They are more Fusion Food style chox, with a blend of interesting sweet/sour, or rich/sharp flavours – rosemary or balsamic vinegar, for instance, used to add a certain zest to the blend.

You can get ice cream in the shop, too, as well as patisserie. Again, the flavours are a bit different – green tea ice cream or golden chestnut, as well as (what else) chocolate and sea salted caramel.

If you’re spotting a bit of Japanese influence in some of the flavours, you’re right – it comes from William Curley’s wife Suzue, who is Japanese.

William Curley also offers a chance to study chocolate making with him – and although it’s not seasonal right now, let me suggest these classes as a great Valentine’s Day present for next year, since I notice the prices are for two students at a time.

So far, William’s chocs are only available in Richmond – which is a long way to go to get your fix – but he’s going to be opening a shop in Ebury Street, Pimlico, later this year. I can’t wait!
