Edinburgh Outdoors: The Union Canal

Edinburgh Outdoors: The Union Canal
Another one of my favourite places to enjoy the Edinburgh outdoors is the Union Canal.  Not everyone even knows or realises that we have a canal here in the city.  It’s not as grand or glamorous as, say, Amsterdam or Venice, but I do think it has its own particular charms and always recommend it for folks who have a few extra days to say in the city. Johnny Fox’s: The Highest Pub in Dublin

Johnny Fox’s: The Highest Pub in Dublin
... Sugar Loaf Mountain. On a sunny day, groups gather in the tables out the front of the pub and bask in the sunshine. Food isn’t always served outdoors, so you might have to take a table inside to enjoy the seafood chowder, brown soda bread, and variety of Irish specialties before bringing your drinks outside. These Sunday afternoon pub lunches were the moments I first fell for with Guinness. At first I was a bit scared of the dark Irish brew, but its creamy finish is the perfect addition to...

To encourage visitors to experience America’s Great outdoors, the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees to 392 national parks April 17-25. Arizona has the most parks participating in the program from the Chiricahuas south of Tucson to Lake Mead near Nevada to the granddaddy of them all, the Grand Canyon.  Here’s a list of all the parks participating by state.  You’ll notice that nps.gov does a great job of highlighting each of their national parks.  Filled with maps, photos...

The Top Five Best Gardens of Edinburgh

The Top Five Best Gardens of Edinburgh
One of the greatest joys of Edinburgh is the great outdoors.  While it isn’t always warm enough to get a tan, the city’s parks and gardens offer tourist and locals a place to get some fresh air and relax.  I’d like to highlight my five favourite gardens of Edinburgh; each one is different and special in its own way, and if you manage to find a clear day here, I’d suggest you visit one or two of them.  You might be surprised just how lovely they really are. Dunbar’s...

Paddle with the Authors of Florida Keys Paddling Atlas
Love Florida? Love the outdoors? Love kayaking? If you answered “yes” to two out of three or all three questions, you might want to consider joining husband-and-wife writing team, Bill and Mary Burnham on one of their three customized kayaking trips. As American Canoe Association (ACA) trained instructors, you can gain one-on-one instruction along the way as well as come away with a new set of skills to add to those you already have, says Mary Burnham. Choose from the two-day/one-night Seven...

Ice, Rocks & Brooms at the Curling Club in DC

Ice, Rocks & Brooms at the Curling Club in DC
... sheet of ice toward a target, and a bit similar to bowling or shuffleboard on ice. The game dates back to 16th century Scotland, where it was played outdoors on frozen ponds in the wintertime.  But its roots are a bit obscure.  The first curling club was founded in 1716 in Scotland, which is also the home to the the sport’s international governing body, the World Curling Federation. Locally, the Washington, DC area has one curling club, the Potomac Curling Club, in nearby Laurel, Maryland. The...

The Rest of Scotland

The Rest of Scotland
... their Enchanted Forest! Killin – worth going just to see the Falls of Dochart rushing through town, but worth staying for the great walks and outdoors on Loch Tay. Campbeltown – a hidden Beatles backwater, hard to get to… and hard to leave! Those are just a few suggestions… but the best part of Scotland is just to get in the car and drive.  You never know what you’ll find. photo by RonAlmog Tags: featuredarticle, outdoors, scotland ...
