The Punchbowl Cemetery

The Punchbowl Cemetery
Earlier this morning, Senator Daniel K. Inouye and Mayor Mufi Hannemann spoke at the Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl [map].  This Memorial Day tradition is the perfect way to begin a day of remembering the soldiers who fought and continue to fight for our freedom.  The Punchbowl Cemetery, as the locals call it, is one of those special places on the island of Oahu that, whether it’s Memorial Day or not, should be visited for...

Memorial Day Bikers Rally in Olympia, Washington

Memorial Day Bikers Rally in Olympia, Washington
... going on in the Dallas area. Tui used to live in Olympia, and provides this description of what it was like to experience last year’s Memorial Day Biker Rally in Olympia. 2009 Memorial Day Biker Rally in Olympia, WA As I walked down Capital Way in Olympia, Washington, goose bumps prickled along my arms and I felt slightly uneasy. Something had created a large clot of traffic ahead, something that sounded like a monstrous swarm of bumblebees. Motorcycles line the walkways. The ominous rumble...

What Memorial Day Means…

To many Americans, Memorial Day is simply the start of summer and a three-day weekend. To veterans, it is a somber day of remembrance and a time to honor lost comrades. This weekend, I was on the National Mall in Washington, DC as Rolling Thunder, a major motorcycle rally and fundraiser for veterans, veteran’s groups, and their families, was starting.  There were thousands of participants, many of which are veterans.   I spoke to several vets, most of who served in Vietnam about...

National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day

While Memorial Day may mean the start of summer for many, it’s evolution and celebration is deeply rooted in our history and the fabric of our country.  After the end of the Civil War, the tradition began of honoring soldier who had been killed in battle, and a special day was set aside for remembrance.  It was originally called Decoration Day. Since then, it has evolved into a Federal Holiday, observed the last Monday in May, and honors those who died while in service to their country. Please...

Top 10 Memorial Day Weekend Events in Vegas

We said it here, first, but those bargain basement prices for rooms aren’t going to last.  Memorial Day Weekend bookings already show the room rates begin to rise, but many properties still have great deals. The good news is that it is warm enough to hang out by the pools, but not yet egg-frying weather. Nightlife is also picking up (although we always are hopping) with lots of new shows and entertainment.  I don’t know what it is about humans, but we like to deliniate and Memorial...

FREE Memorial Day Activities in Washington, DC

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day honors the fallen dead of the U.S. military. The tradition of honoring soldiers killed in battle started at the end of the Civil War, as many communities where battles had occurred, held memorial services.  In 1868, a Union Army veterans group declared that a national “Decoration Day” be observed.  Later that year, the first major observance was held Arlington National Cemetery. Flowers were placed on the graves of soldiers from both...
