Lord Lucan – an unsolved murder mystery

Lord Lucan was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. ‘Lucky’ Lucan was the seventh earl, an aristocrat and a wealthy one. He went to Eton, he served in the Guards, and he was  he lived in Belgrave Square.

And he disappeared in very strange circumstances.

By 1974 he was separated from his wife, who remained in the house looking after their three children. A nanny was hired to help – Sandra Rivett. She’d only been working there a couple of months when Lady Lucan, in a distressed state, ran into the Plumber’s Arms pub screaming: ‘Help me, help me, he’s murdered my nanny’.

Well, someone definitely had; Rivett’s body was found stuffed into a canvas mail sack. She’d been bludgeoned to death.

But Lucan had disappeared. His wealthy friends seem to have decided that he was innocent, and helped him escape the police. The car he had borrowed was found at Newhaven a week later, with bloodstains in front and a lead pipe like the one that had been found at the scene of the crime. Presumably he’d taken a boat from Newhaven to… where?

An inquest jury found Lucan guilty. But no one really cared about the verdict. What everyone wanted to know was where Lucan had turned up.

Some people think he scuttled his boat, committing suicide because he’d murdered the nanny when he meant to kill his wife. Other people think his friends set him up with a second life abroad. There have been sightings of him in Johanesburg, in Goa, in New Zealand.

He’s become a bit like Elvis, with sightings everywhere, except that nobody ever claims to have seen Lord Lucan working in a chip shop. That would be a bit infra dig, you know, old chap!

It’s all very strange.

Anyway … if you want to see where it all happened, you can. 46 Lower Belgrave Street is where the murder was committed, in the basement kitchen. a#And you can still see the Plumbers’ Arms where Lady Lucan stumbled in screaming murder.
