Eco-Friendly Events in April

Most people know that Earth Day is in April, but did you know that it is National Gardening month, too?  Luckily, Orange County has some great events going on this month so you can take part in the celebration of spring, gardening, and Earth Day!

April 10 – Community Gardenfest in San Clemente

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the San Clemente Community Center (100 N. Calle Seville), the San Clemente Garden Club (SCGC) and the City of San Clemente will be hosting the Community Gardenfest. The event will feature horticultural mini-symposiums, short educational presentations for kids, a Master Gardener on site to answer any gardening questions, and a garden flea market. This is a great event to get everything you need to create a garden of your own at home!

For more information, call (949)498-2335.

April 17 – Earth Day Celebration in San Juan Capistrano

This annual event at the Ecology Center (32701 Alipaz St.) in San Juan Capistrano is one of the best, most environmentally friendly events in the county.  From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a variety of activities for everyone in the family, including organic plant and seed sale, seed sprouting for kids, composting with worms, plant-based tie-dying, kitchen gardening, and  music. Last year they made mini pizzas and cookies in the outdoor oven, so be sure to look out for that!

April 22-25 – The Southern California 21st Annual Spring Garden Show in Costa Mesa

The largest garden show in Southern California will be at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa (map), and will feature over 75 garden vendors offering plants, garden accessories, and more.  Landscapes created by local organizations will be on display throughout the first level of the Macy’s Home Store wing.  There will also be seminars over the course of the show on topics ranging from bird gardening to growing summer vegetables to plant specific seminars (roses, irises, African violets).  There will also be arts and crafts for children.

Visit the garden show website for more information.  The event is free.
