Coffee Served Up on the West Side

Tired of the grab-and-go coffee chains that have riddled Phoenix?  Check out my favorite West Valley options that serve a relaxing alternative to the ordinary cup of jo.

Bad Ass Coffee

coffee, coffee shopsLet’s be honest … don’t you just love this name?  It’s a real departure from any java place I’ve been to.  With its laid-back atmosphere, overly friendly staff and Hawaiian motif, Bad Ass Coffee (map) serves amazing Kona coffee, plain and simple.  You feel as if you’re on Waikiki Beach right here in Surprise, Arizona.

Baker Wee & Coffee

A true mom-and-pop establishment, you’ll love how you can savor a fresh cup atop one of their 50s-style barstools.  Tasty sandwiches, homemade breads and desserts are made by Kim Wee, the owner of Baker Wee (map).  It reminds me of the bakeries I grew up with and I hear the wedding cakes are pretty great too.

Ground Control

The ultimate Italian coffee experience, this Goodyear spot not only has great roasts and blends, but also serves scoops of gelato in flavors like tiramisu, jasmine and mango.  For first time, early rising customers like myself, the bottles of champagne and wine lining the back bar might be a bit confusing.  It seems by day, Ground Control (map) is a European style coffee house, but by night dim lights glow and live bands lighten the mood on weekends.

Cabin Coffee Espresso

No local artwork of natural landscapes or fruit baskets are featured at this Glendale establishment.   The name, Cabin Coffee (map), is fitting of its interior that resembles a cozy mountain lodge.  Their latte art is top-notch and I also recommend their fruit smoothies and hot teas. You may be missing out on your yearly ski trip, but sipping a chai latte near their fireplace may make you forget all about it.

Next time you’re looking for a place to escape the daily grind, consider the adventure of drinking local, that is taking the leap to try coffee houses run by local entrepreneurs.  Just don’t take my advice, visit Arizona Coffee, one of my favorite blogs on the best in local coffee places in the state.
