Homegrown Ice Cream

An ice cream break can be just what the Boston visitor needs when summer temperatures are soaring and  spirits and arches are sagging. Here is a run-down of some of Boston’s best ice cream  establishments where you can indulge in a (double!) scoop of your favorite flavor.

J.P. Licks (659 Centre St., Jamaica Plain)(Map), 352 Newbury St., Boston(Map), 1312 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge (Map). A Boston institution since 1981, J.P. Licks still makes all its ice cream from scratch from its Jamaica Plain headquarters. Coffee Oreo and Cookie Dough are among their most famous regular flavors and Fresh Peach is a summer favorite.

Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream (1255 Cambridge St.)(Map)Located in Inman Square, Christina’s is known for it’s  large variety of “this is Cambridge” flavors like Adzuki bean and  herbal chai spice. The Mexican Chocolate and Burnt Sugar though have legions of local fans.

Toscanini’s (899 Main St., Cambridge)(Map) Tosci’s specializes in bold flavors like Burnt Caramel and Cardamon and a great job with kid-pleasing vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.Micro sundaes make a perfectly adequate lunch.

Ben & Jerry’s (174 Newbury St. Boston)(Map) New England-based (Vermont) Ben & Jerry’s rates as one of the best commercially produced ice cream anywhere. The Newbury Street scoop shop has all your quirky faves- including Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia as well as their latest creation, Boston Cream Pie with chunks of yellow cakes, chocolate flakes and bits of pastry cream.

Jennifer’s Frosty (Ice Cream Truck in front of Public Garden at Arlington and Boylston)(Map). Since 1990, Jennifer’s Frosty has been serving soft-serve ice cream from an old-fashion ice cream truck almost permanently stationed  (April-October) in front of Boston’s Public Garden. The truck has an endearing scene from the children’s storybook Make Way for Ducklings of Officer Mike stopping traffic to allow Mother Duck and  her ducklings to cross the street. Grab a bench in the Public Garden overlooking the Swan Boats- an incomparable setting to enjoy your cone!
