Hemingway Look-Alike Contest

As I made my way through high school, I always had that familiar look. The one where someone would squint their eyes at me, ponder, and wonder where they knew me from. Oftentimes, they would confuse me with “that” girl from our neighboring  school. I was never lucky enough to look like some important — a painter, an actress or ahem .. Ernest Hemingway. If you have that Ernest Hemingway look, you should start planning now to spend some times in the Keys for the Hemingway Days celebration.

Taking place from July 20-25 at Sloppy Joe’s Bar on Duval Street (Yep, that’s where Hemingway frequented often.), the annual Hemingway Day celebration will take place. Look-alikes from international destinations will compete to be this year’s “Papa” going as far as donning wool turtleneck, safari togs and other Hemingway-like attire in the beautiful Florida heat.  The competition begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday and Friday, July 22-23, with the finals being held on 6:30 pm on Saturday, July 24. The judging will be done be winners from the previous years. Will this year’s winner be a first-time contender or a repeat performer? To add to the look-a-like contest, contenders also participate in the “running of the bulls,” a photo opp for guests attending, an arm wrestling contest and a birthday party for the famed Hemingway.

So you don’t quite have that look? No worries, you might want to participate in the annual literary contest — the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. Lorian Hemingway, one of Ernest Hemingway’s grandchildren, started this competition in 1981 and it has since grown tremendously and draws between 800-1100 entries per year with a $2000 prize awarded annually to emerging writers of short fiction.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the famed competition. The competition is one of the many events to celebrate the birthday of Ernest Hemingway. It takes place at Sloppy Joe’s, 201 Duval St in Key West (map). For information about Sloppy Joe’s “Papa” Hemingway Look-Alike Contest and other look-alike events, visit www.sloppyjoes.com.
