Discover What Floats Your Boat at Wooden Boat Festival

The Center for Wooden Boats proudly sponsors the annual Wooden Boat Festival as an old-fashioned waterfront festival  It’s fun, it’s simple, and it’s mostly free.  Now in it’s 33rd year, the popular family event is about as down-home and uncomplicated as it can be.

wooden boat The theme for the 2010 Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival is heritage wooden boats, and the event promises to offer another year of water fun:

  • Boat viewing – Wooden boat owners from around the area proudly display their classic vessels.  Many will invite you aboard.
  • Boat rides – You’ll want to sign up early for this popular event, as you take a trip on Lake Union by sail, row, paddle, steam, electric or power boat.
  • Activities for the kids – Toy boat building, treasure hunt, coloring contest, sidewalk chalk art, and lots more to keep young minds and hands engaged.
  • Demonstrations – Rope fender making, tool sharpening, celestial navigation (my favorite), and more fun topics and ways to learn.
  • Quick & Daring – Teams have 24 hours to build a boat, launch it, and then race in a hilarious regatta.  It’s an exercise in creativity, planning and construction, and a little bit of humor for good measure.  A big crowd favorite.
  • Music – Live music all weekend long on the Lake Union Park lawn.

The Center for Wooden Boats provides hands-on boating experiences using its fleet of historic wooden boats.  They operate year round, renting sail and rowboats to the public.  They also offer adult and youth classes in sailing and other boating skills.  Private sailing lessons are also available.
