Give Dad an Experience This Summer in the South

Who says that Father’s Day has to be limited to just one day? world'sbestdadflickrjasontromm

In the South, you can celebrate Dad throughout the entire season with experiences tailored to his interest, and ones he won’t forget.

Need some suggestions? Here are five worth considering.

1.  Explore the Everglades on a wave runner at Marco Island (Fla.) Marriott Beach Resort (map). The one-hour guided tour takes guests 15 miles into the 10,000 Islands of the Everglades. Be sure to pay attention to your surroundings because you’ll never know what wildlife you may see.

2. Spend some time touring local or nearby National Wildlife Refuges. Drive to the top of Mt. Scott at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Indiahoma, Okla. You might spot a bison, elk, deer or Texas Longhorn along the way. Go biking at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge located in Sanibel, Fla. Just watch out for bobcat and alligator sightings. Bring the camera along, just in case, as you walk along the trails at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Davis, WVa. You never know what you might spot.

3. Don’t forget to bring your waders or wading shoes when you visit the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail. The only trail in the nation dedicated to fly fishing, it highlights 15 spots in the area. If you aren’t near this part of the region, you can enjoy this sport in other places like Arkansas, Georgia and Virginia.

4. It’s okay to scream loudly when the Intimidator at Carowinds (map; Charlotte, N.C.) takes its first drop of 211-feet at a 74-degree angle. Hold on, because it gets better. If you and your dad are roller coaster junkies, the South doesn’t disappoint. In Pigeon Forge, Tenn., there’s Thunderhead at Dollywood (map), a wooden coaster with a 100-foot drop. Feel the twists on another wooden coaster, Kentucky Rumbler at Beech Bend Amusement Park (map) in Bowling Green, Ky. If the 200-foot climb doesn’t take your breath away, maybe the 90-degree will. SheiKra at Busch Gardens (map) Tampa Bay, Fla., isn’t just for anyone. It takes a true coaster enthusiast who’ve think ridden it all to experience this floor-less coaster.

5. Here’s the chance to drive fast legally. Get behind the wheel of a race car and feel what it’s like to take on Talladega Superspeedway (map) or Charlotte Motor Speedway (map) with the Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure. Find out what it’s like on the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway (map) or Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway (map) with the Richard Perry Driving Experience. There’s also the NASCAR Racing Experience that introduces you to Texas Motor Speedway (map) in Fort Worth or Kentucky Speedway (map) in Sparta.
