Weekend Roundup: June 18-20

downtown, houston, weekend, attractionsHere are my top picks for what to do¬†this weekend, June 18-20 in Houston, TX.¬† Don’t forget – Sunday is Father’s Day!

Friday June 18

Sips, Suds & Sliders: It’s¬†Food & Wine Week¬†here in Houston, and while there are weekend-long events my top pick is Friday’s Sips, Suds & Sliders tasting at CITYCENTRE’s Life Time Athletic.¬† Texas beer and wine, plus a chef’s mini-burger competition?¬† Yes please! Add in live music and a great ticket price and you’ve got yourself a Friday night.¬† CITYCENTRE is located at 800 West Sam Houston Parkway N. (map).¬† Tickets are $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door, while supplies last, and are available online.¬†¬†Event hours: 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM.

Don’t forget the Cirque de Soleil show, “Allegria”; I wrote about it last week, and it’s playing through the weekend at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker-Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX (map).¬† There are two Friday shows, at¬†2:30 PM & 7:30 PM.¬† Level 1 & 2 seats are $64 for children, $80 for adults.¬†¬†Information for additional weekend shows¬†is available on the Berry Center website.

Saturday June 19

The Juneteenth Celebration at the Miller Outdoor Theater- “A Gulf Coast Juneteenth” -¬†celebrates the historic June 19, 1865 date when Texas slaves learned of their freedom.¬† The celebration lasts from 7 PM – 10 PM and is free to all, with live music all evening¬†from some truly great acts:¬†The Meters Experience w/ Leo Nocentelli, Soul Rebels Brass Band, and Nathan & The Zydego Cha Chas.¬† The Miller Outdoor Theater is located at 6000 Hermann Park Drive (map).

A big buzz surrounds the play “Intelligence Slave” playing now at the Alley Theater in downtown Houston.¬† The story is intriguing: a concentration camp prisoner is being kept alive by the Nazis while he develops the world’s¬†first four-function calculator.¬† This is the final weekend for the show in Houston, so now is¬†the time to see it!¬† There are two¬†Saturday shows, one at¬†2:30 PM ($21)¬†and another at¬†8 PM ($55).¬† Tickets are available online.¬† The Alley Theater is located at 615 Texas Avenue (map); you can call the box office at 713.220.5700.

Sunday June 20

Imagine my surprise and excitement when I learned that my favorite Finger Lakes, NY winery would be having a tasting this weekend, right here in Houston.¬† I gifted my husband with tickets for Father’s Day (from me and our dog, Sandy).¬† Dr. Konstantin Frank¬†Wine Cellars is a producer of award-winning Rieslings and Gewurtzraminers, among others.¬† Sunday evening there will¬† be a¬†2-hour tasting of four wines at The Tasting Room, 1101-18 Uptown Park Blvd.¬† Vintner Fred Frank – Dr. Frank’s grandson – will be on hand to answer questions and¬†sign bottles (and unbeknownst to him, get accosted by two of his biggest fans from Upstate NY).¬† Tickets are $15 per person, and the¬†tasting is from¬† 5 PM – 7 PM.¬† You can purchase tickets online and at the door, and take it from me – if you love wine, you won’t want to miss this.

If a relaxing Sunday of wine tasting isn’t for you, Tool is playing at the Toyota Center.¬† The Grammy-award winning alt-metal band is playing at¬†8 PM (doors at 7 PM).¬† Tickets are $45, $55, and $65 and can be purchased online as well as by calling 866.446.8849.¬† The Toyota Center is located at 1510 Polk Street (map).
