Get Down and Dirty in Scottsdale

outdoor activitiesThe highlight of every summer in Scottsdale is a messy, joyous, and free event for Valley children to have some good clean fun. Mighty Mud Mania is an annual event hosted in Chaparral Park (map) where 160 tonnes of “clean” dirt and water is trucked in and sifted into freshly dug pits.

The main event is an obstacle course with races throughout the day for four various age groups — 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-17. Other activities include three giant waterslides, sandcastle building, open pool swimming and a giant water cannon. For kids 6 and under, there will be a mini mud course, mud pit, puddle pool, buckets, toys, bubbles, beach balls and more.

The mania began in 1976 as the “Shout It Out Decathlon,” a promotional gimmick for Johnson’s Wax “Shout” Spray pre-wash. Johnson’s dropped the program because the mud in Arizona was too tough for their product, but the City of Scottsdale felt the activity was so successful that they incorporated the event into their summer recreation program.

The look on these kids faces when they hit that mud and submerge themselves is priceless. First, the Knee Bender sends them through mud under a big tarp, Tube Trouble gets them slithering through big-tire inner tubes and the Tube Dive demands a dive through a huge inner tube into a 1.5m-deep mud-pit. They finally start to clean up at the Pit Fall, plunging into a pool of water. After a hose-down from the fire department, the fun continues on 30-metre waterslides.

Although participation in the Mighty Mud Mania is free, participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation to help support the Vista del Camino Food Bank.

Old clothes are a must and registration is free, which makes for a “dirt cheap” day out for the whole family.
