The Cake Cafe in Dublin
Automatically, I’m drawn to the name. Who wouldn’t want to duck into the Cake Cafe for an afternoon treat, or meet up with friends at the Cake Cafe for an early-bird dinner? People planning a visit to Dublin should carry a list of places they can duck into while a rainshower passes – and this cafe should be at the top of the list.
Bring a map too, because the Cake Cafe isn’t particularly easy to find. Many of the streets in the area have similar names, but this obstacle might make arrival even more sweet. When I first strolled through the door, I was surprised to be greeted by a charming, mismatched, cozy cafe. From the polished website and reviews I’ve read recently – I was expecting a new fancy little cafe that had earned a reputation for quality food.
Instead the cafe is tucked into the back of one of the greenest buildings in Dublin, the Daintree Building, and there are a few tables and chairs sprawled out in the courtyard. Inside, the cafe is nothing fancy either, but in a delightful way. The day’s specials (including homemade soup, tarts, salads, and a daily gratin) were written on a blackboard. Cupcakes and a decadent chocolate cake were on display on the counter.
I took a seat to grab a quick coffee and was surrounded by a variety of interesting people. A couple artists exchanging photographs and sketches sat next to me devouring sandwiches on thick, country-style bread. Some stylish students sat quietly reading while enjoying their tea from antique tea cups. Sometimes, grabbing lunch in the center of the city during the week means eating in a room full of people in suits – but this cafe seemed to have its own artistic following. For an alternative cafe option that serves delicious, fresh food, dig out your map and find the Cake Cafe.
