Beach Fun & Safety With Kids

Clearwather Beach With Kids

Whether it’s a summer weekend or a vacation down South, the beach is a great place to be.  As with any outing with kids, you can’t sacrifice safety for fun – so here’s a few tips to ensure your family time at the beach creates only great memories.

The only lobsters you want to see are the ones on your plate, so make sure you set up shop in the shade or under an umbrella.  Sunscreen is essential for everyone over 6 months, and hats are key for protecting eyes and saving scalps.  For those who prefer the take-my-hat-off-and-throw-it-on-the-ground game, make sure the sunhat has a tie that actually ties – much more secure than Velcro.

Keep your beach toys to a minimum – the more you bring means the more you have to keep track of and lug home.  A few buckets and shovels and a beach ball are all that’s necessary to construct sandcastle skyscrapers and conduct your very own beach World Cup.  Do factor in breaks from all the fun to enjoy sand-free snacks and lunch, plus a break from the sun.  You’ll all be able to hit the sand running, refreshed and ready for more.

Most public beaches have lifeguards, but they are not a substitute for a watchful parent or caregiver.  Kids playing with floaties and rafts call for vigilant supervision, and children with a tendency to take off should be put in a lifejacket for the day.  No matter how competently they can swim, kids should be within arm’s reach while in the water.

We are delighted that our children share our love of the sand and sea.  One of our daughter’s favourite beaches is Clearwater Beach (map) in Florida. It has powder white sand and a big jungle gym, plus it’s easily accessible from two airports: Tampa (map) or St. Petersburg (map) – what’s not to love?
