Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games

Texas Scottish Festival & Highland GamesYou don’t have to be Scottish to attend the Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games. All are welcome to this lively celebration of Celtic culture. The festival, now in it’s 24th year, runs June 4th – 6th at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It is well-attended, with over 40,000 people expected this year.

Visitors will experience top notch Scottish musicians, professional athletes, highland dancers, Celtic food, a huge beer tent, and plenty of good cheer throughout the event. If you are Scottish, but don’t yet know which clan you belong to you can find out. The festival has over 65 different tents, representing different Scottish clans, to help you learn about your family’s history.

In addition, there are seminars on genealogy and the Gaelic language. A mock Scottish military encampment will intrigue history buffs. There is even a dog show featuring Scottish breeds. Other activities include a Scotch ale brewing competition, a shortbread contest and a birds of prey exhibit. The festival also offers special activities for the little ones.

Celtic music will fill the air all three days. The festival features solo bagpiping contests, as well as performances by the North Texas Caledonia Pipes & Drums. Celtic musical groups include Clandestine, Jiggernaut, Seamus Stout and the Kildares. Other performers include Scottish fiddlers, such as Brian McNeill, and Scottish balladeers, such as Alex Beaton.

Scottish foods, yes – even the infamous haggis – will be for available, as well as fish and chips, Scotch eggs, bangers, meat pies, bridies, and American festival foods. While Scots may be known for their thrift, there will be plenty of items for sale: beautiful tartan wear, kilts, Celtic jewelry, artwork, music and many other items.

As you can see, the Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games packs a lot of Celtic culture into one little weekend. As a member of the Cameron clan, I’m excited to check it out. Maybe I’ll see you there.
