Temple Bar Book Market in Dublin

There are many great places in Dublin to go for an afternoon stroll, but one of the best on a sunny day is Temple Bar. This historic district, flanking the River Liffey on the south side of Dublin, is well-known for its nightlife, but that isn’t all this cobbled district offers. Beyond the tourist-filled pubs, there is a variety of culture to be found in Temple Bar, if you know where, and more particularly when, to look.

Plan a visit to Temple Bar on a Saturday afternoon and you would barely recognize it from the 2am version most visitors see. I love heading to Temple Bar Square for a browse of the Temple Bar book market. On Saturdays the square becomes home to carts of secondhand books. Even if I plan on browsing, I am always tempted to make several purchases by everything from beautiful full-color Irish cookbooks to classics to Irish poetry. They often have lightly-used copies of recent bestsellers as well.

Beyond the books, Temple Bar Square has a great atmosphere on a Saturday. Most of the time you will be treated to some free live entertainment (feel free to drop the singer songwriters a few coins) and there are many cafes around to grab a coffee or a light lunch. If the clouds roll in, head towards the Irish Film Institute (IFI) to enjoy their indoor cafe and catch a movie.

If new books are your thing, the Gutter Bookshop is located just at the edge of Temple Bar. If you’re headed up this way, bring your new purchase to the cafe around the corner, Queen of Tarts, for a sweet treat. Between the market, the IFI, the bookshops, the local theatres, and galleries, you are sure to realize that there’s more to Temple Bar than just rowdy pubs!
