Summer’s Coming! Outdoor Swimming Pools Open

Vancouver has several excellent outdoor swimming pools gracing the shores of the beaches and from May 22 on it’s officially ’summer’ as the pools open for business. All the pools are accessible for people with disabilities and safe, supervised  swimming places for children.

At Kitsilano Beach, the Kitsilano Pool is the only salt water pool in Vancouver and one of the few in the world.  It’s heated and has easy access “beach entry” for children.   There’s picnic and playground areas outside of the pool as well as concession stands.

In Stanley Park, overlooking beautiful English Bay, the Second Beach Pool is a heated beach-style pool with lots of slides and fun things for children.  It’s my favorite pool and I’ve spent many pleasant summer days there.  Like at Kits Pool, you can sit on the beach after your swim and have a picnic or buy food at the concession stand.  There are some excellent playground areas for children nearby.

New Brighton Pool is located on Burrard Inlet at the north end of the PNE.  I often cycle there in the evening for a refreshing swim in the heated pool that offers length swimming and a beach entry for toddlers.  New Brighton Park has picnic tables and a playground area as well as a sea-wall walkway.
