Make leis for Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a day to honor those who gave their lives in service to the country, and this year on the Friday, May 28, before Memorial Day, the Outrigger Hotels in Waikiki are offering a special lei making tutorial.
The giving of lei has always been a traditional Hawaiian way to welcome, congratulate or honor a person, so what better way to spend Memorial Day than learning how to make a commemorative lei to honor veterans? Visitors to both Outrigger Reef on the Beach [map] and Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach [map] can learn basic lei making techniques. You will most certainly learn how to string common leis such as plumeria and orchid and maybe even learn how to string fragrant pikake. When finished, you can opt to donate your lei to the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
This day of lei making is open to the public. You don’t have to be staying at the Outrigger hotels to participate, but travelers heading to Waikiki will certainly find a host of unique activities to get their hands on at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach and Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Located on world famous Waikiki Beach, both hotels are perfectly situated for unlimited access to Oahu’s sandy playground and vibrant nightlife. Room rates at Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Outrigger Reef on the Beach start at $159 and $169, respectively.
