Outdoor Oasis in Dublin

One of my favorite places in all of Dublin is Herbert Park (map). There are so many endearing qualities about this outdoor space: the surrounding neighborhoods are incredibly charming to walk through, the flowers and trees are diverse and beautiful, and the pristine swans in the lake are a pleasure to observe.

Beyond all of these characteristics of the park, it is also off the beaten tourist path. You are likely to only hear Irish accents as you take a stroll through the park. On a sunny day, there will be many kids feeding bread to the ducks while the swans glide by. From picnics to the perfect place to get some exercise, Herbert Park is a destination to shoot for if you find yourself tired of the City Centre of Dublin.

While the park has its charms year-round, each May there is an explosion of color. The early spring flowers cover the park in the yellow of daffodils, but in May, tulips of a rainbow of bright colors line the pathways. Trees blossom into tiny white and pink flowers. When a breeze blows, the petals fall down like rain as you take a stroll through the park.

If you’re traveling to Dublin with kids, there is also a great playground. Let the kids burn off a bit of energy while you read the newspaper (I recommend the Irish Times!) Bring along your tennis racket if you want to get in a game or two as well. While Herbert Park might not be on the top of the list for a traveler who is only visiting Dublin for a few days, it will be perfect for the traveler looking to experience a more intimate side to the city without spending a lot of money.

As families push their toddlers around in strollers, immaculately dressed senior citizens go for an evening stroll, and kids go running by in soccer or rugby uniforms, you will feel as if you’ve discovered a real local side of Dublin, and become a part of a beautiful neighborhood, even if only for an afternoon.
