Elephants at the Houston Zoo

houston zoo, elephant day, baby elephantIt’s a boy!  Wait - maybe you haven’t heard?  The Houston Zoo has a new baby elephant and his name is Baylor (named after the Baylor College of Medicine).  Baylor is, like his mother Shanti, an Asian elephant; Asian elephants are endangered in the wild and difficult to breed in captivity so this is a very exciting event.  Little Baylor weighed in at a mere 348 lbs. and by all accounts he is a healthy and happy calf.  If all goes well he’ll be viewable to the public by next week; in the meantime check out the Trunk Tales blog for more information, including video footage.  Welcome to Houston, Baylor!

In honor of Baylor’s joyous arrival to our city, I have to let you know about the Elephant Open House at the Houston Zoo, which will take place on Saturday June 5.  The Zoo has a brand new elephant barn and from 8 AM to 10:30 AM on June 5 the barn will be open to ticketholders.  You can meet the elephants’ caretakers while viewing various exhibits about the animals and their lives at the zoo.  This is a very special opportunity to see the zoo and these beautiful animals.  Fewer than 100 tickets are available for this event and it will sell out quickly.
