Mother’s Day at the Zoo….Anyone?

As a Mum when I heard about ‘Mother’s Day’ at Auckland Zoo (map) on Sunday 9 May I was a little skeptical that this was an event for Mums and more of a sneaky way for the kids to get a trip to one of their favourite places!

Madju - recent addition at Auckland Zoo

However, after checking what is planned for this special day I had to agree that it sounds like a fabulous day out and a great way for the family to spend some time together in a very fun environment and yes, the fact that there are goodie bags on offer for the first 100 mums through the gate has definite appeal!

There are currently a lot of ‘new additions’ at the zoo so it is a great time to see the zoo mums in action, these include giraffe, orangutans, hippos, red panda, otters and tiger.

The zoo is also running a competition whereby you can write in (via email) telling them why your Mum is so special and she will go in the draw to win a ‘behind the scenes’ encounter with 3 other people to put out treats for the orangutan Mum, Melur and her son, Madju. Send your entries to zoonews@aucklandcity.govt.nz by Wednesday 5 May, the winner will be notified by Friday 7 May.

Devonshire tea is also on offer all day at Darwin’s Café or a hot chocolate and muffin if you prefer – nice!

So why not treat Mum (or yourself!) to something a little bit different this Mother’s Day and get along to Auckland Zoo – oh, and don’t forget that goodie bag, make sure you are nice and early!
