Amsterdam: May Events
May is the perfect month for you trip to Amsterdam; lots of events during this month. May is your last chance to visit Keukenhof Flower Garden in Lisse, the world’s most spectacular flower show. Hemeltje Lief Festival is the place to be with the kids. Book lovers can browse at Dam Square, books in all languages and on all subjects.
Lots of public holidays in May:
* Thursday 13 May is Ascension day which is a public holiday. Many people take the Friday off as well. Theme parks, beach pavillions and other outdoor activities do a roaring trade if the weather is good.
*Sunday 23 May and Monday 24 May, Whitsun another long weekend.
ANNUAL EVENTS IN MAY
WHAT: Keukenhof Flower Garden

Dazzling spring flowers in a beautifully landscaped garden with 80,000 tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and fifteen kilometers of walking paths.
WHAT: Dodenherdenking (Remembrance Day)
WHERE: Dam Square (map)
WHEN: 4 May, 8 pm
Wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument on Dam Square in commemoration of the victims of WW II. The ceremony is followed by two minutes silence at 8 pm. A similar commemeration takes place at the Homo Monument at Westermarkt in honour of gay soldiers who were killed.
WHAT: Liberation Day
WHERE: All over Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands
WHEN: 5 May
Celebrations in commemoration of the 1945 liberation from Nazi occupation. Expect live music, open-air markets and speeches. Festivities concentrate in Vondelpark, Museumplein and Leidseplein. Flags flutter from all public buildings. Highlight of the day is an open air concert on a floating stage on the Amstel River between Carré Theatre and Magere Brug.

WHERE: throughout the Netherlands
WHEN: 8 and 9 May
Windmills and watermills are open to the public and spin their sails.
WHAT: Hemeltje Lief Festival
WHERE: NDSM, T.T. Neveritaweg 15 (map)
WHEN: 13 May
Enjoy the food, listen to the music, bring the children because DJ Elfje (fairy DJ) entertains them in the Discokids. The festival goes for the adults on until the small hours, bring an extra coat to protect against chilly night air.

Dam Square fills with bookstalls, new and second-hand, and hosts an open-air concert
WHAT: World Press Photo Exhibition
WHERE: Oude Kerk, Oudekerksplein 23 (map)
WHEN: until 20 June
World’s largest annual press photography contest. The very best professional photographers enter the photo competition. After the Amsterdam kick-off the exhibition tours the world.
WHAT: Jordaan Open Studios
WHERE: Jordan quarter
WHEN: 22, 23 and 24 May
Resident-artists of the Jordaan neighbourhood open their doors to the public and exhibit their work. It is a great opportunity to see the inside of Jordaan houses. Participating studios put out large flags showing they are open.

WHEN: 26 – 30 May
Mainstream contemporary Arts Fair. Meeting place for artists, art lovers and collectors. Everything from jewellery to paintings. About 100 Dutch and international art galleries take part.
