The Hit Musical “Wicked” On Sale

I’m a musical nut. I was a musical comedy major in college, performed as an amateur most of my young adult life and to this day still occasionally put on my tap shoes and do a stint performing in a local musical theatre production.

So when I heard a few years ago that the then-new musical “Wicked” was going to have an out-of-town tryout at the Orpheum Theatre, courtesy of the SHN organization, I was beside myself.

I was already a fan of Idina Menzel (who plays the green witch, Elphaba) from having seen her on Broadway as Maureen in “Rent,” and a good friend had told me that Kristin Chenoweth (who plays the good witch, Glinda) was a giant vocal talent. Top that off with the fact that “Wicked” was written by musical theatre legend Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Pippin”) and I could not wait to go.

So it was with great expectations that I went to see “Wicked” and dragged my non-musical-loving husband Jon with me. We were not disappointed. Even Jon turned to me at intermission and exclaimed with an enthusiasm I’ve never heard him use for a musical, “Wow, this is great.”

That was seven years ago, and even though Menzel and Chenoweth are no longer gracing the San Francisco stage production, the critics and audiences are still raving about the show.

All of this is by way of saying that if you’ve heard about the hit musical “Wicked,” but put off seeing it due to pricing or proximity, you’re in luck. This past week, the Orpheum Theatre announced that all performances through May are now as much as 50% off — the lowest price seen to date for this Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical.
