Cocktails and Fresh Food in the Garden

Every Thursday night from May until September, Atlanta Botanical Gardens (map) will be hosting Cocktails in the Garden from 6-10 pm. This is the only opportunity for the public to experience the blooming spring gardens at night while sampling garden-fresh light appetizers and supporting local and sustainably-grown food.

Guests will have the chance to see the Atlanta skyline in the evening while enjoying fresh appetizers as chefs provide live demos in the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen. A live DJ will also be spinning smooth beats to set the tone of the evening. Each month there will be a different theme at Cocktails in the Garden to feature what is fresh and in season in the garden.

The Edible Garden is definitely something that should not be missed: it was an abandoned parking lot that has now been turned into a colorful blossoming garden. The garden is meant to inspire visitors to grow and eat local foods. Cocktails in the Garden events will showcase the farm-to-table concept, as well as demonstrate how to cultivate and consume your own or locally grown foods. The whole process is a step in the right direction of creating a sustainable environment, and you will be surprised at the large variety of fruits and vegetables.

The Edible Garden project has been a $2 million effort that has turned an acre of old asphalt into an inviting green space. Here is what the executive director of the Edible Garden has to say:

“Edible gardens are the next wave of what’s becoming popular in gardening across the United States,” said Mary Pat Matheson. “It doesn’t hurt that First Lady Michelle Obama has really moved the idea of growing your own food to the forefront. It’s all about making that connection with people.”

The garden boasts fresh vegetables and fruits 365 days of the year, with orange cauliflower in season right at the moment. Also, with hiring some of the best chefs that the city of Atlanta has to offer, Cocktails in the Garden is guaranteed to be a tasty experience.
