Chicago’s Rogers Park Gets a New Restaurant

This May, Rogers Park on Chicago’s north side will get a new addition to its dining scene: Act One Café (1330 W. Morse Ave.; 773.381.4550).

The 100-seat restaurant officially opens its doors on May 21 and will have what it calls a menu of “comfort foods” (that feature sustainable ingredients) created by Executive Chef Jimmy Madia, one of the more talented culinary experts in Chicago. Side note: In October 2002, Madla opened Coobah, a popular “Latin fusion” restaurant in Chicago’s Southport neighborhood that was voted “Best New Restaurant in 2003” and “Best Latin Restaurant in Chicago in 2007.”

Quick facts about Act One Café:

The restaurant will be open for dinner nightly except Monday and will have a brunch buffet on weekends. Dinner will be served Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. (The bar will be open weekdays until 10 p.m. and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.) Brunch will be served on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Entrees will range from $7 to $20.

Appetizers will include seared scallops with garlic-brown butter sauce and herbed brioche crumble; veggie tater tots made with zucchini, red pepper, and whipped goat cheese; and crispy spring rolls filled with spicy jerked chicken, caramelized plantain, and cabbage.

Entrées will include a Berkshire Pork French dip that is slow roasted for seven hours and served on a Highland Bakery French roll with natural jus and house-made (hot) mustard; Dietzler Farm 10 oz. hangar steak with a special Act One steak sauce and mashed potatoes; and seafood “Booyah” with shrimp, scallops, calamari, Fresno chili, and black beans in a saffron-tomato broth.

Now to the best part: desserts, which will include malted chocolate pot au crème made with Turbinado sugar brulée, brandied Chantilly, and vanilla tuile, and bread pudding with white chocolate and pistachios and a “Manhattan” hard sauce.

The restaurant is located a 1/2 block east of the CTA Red Line Morse Avenue stop.
