Wolf Trap for Great Summer Music

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to select upcoming plays, music and dance performances at Wolf Trap just outside of Washington DC.

As usual, the schedule includes everything from the National Symphony Orchestra to Harry Connick, Jr. and Jackson Browne.

Wolf Trap Filene Center

My favorite location to see and hear a show is sitting on the lawn relaxing on a blanket with a picnic and a nice bottle of wine.  But some people prefer to avoid the need to arrive early, and the infamous rush to secure a blanket spot, so for them, reserved seats (also protected from possible rain under the pavilion) are the solution.

Each year I try to highlight some of the best and more unique shows on the schedule. So here are my picks for this season.  Shows with * are performers I’ve seen and recommend.

  • Jeff Beck – June 7
  • Jethro Tull – June 8 *
  • Harry Connick, Jr. – June 15
  • Sheryl Crow – June 17
  • Natalie Cole – June 24 *
  • Pat Benatar & REO Speedwagon – June 29
  • Gipsy Kings – July 2 & 3 *
  • Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – July 15 *
  • The Beach Boys – July 25 *
  • Steve Miller – July 27
  • Holst’s The Planets with the National Symphony Orchestra, with HD images from NASA – July 31
  • Willie Nelson – August 3 *
  • Bugs Bunny at the Symphony with the NSO – August 6 & 7 *
  • Al Jarreau & The George Duke Trio – August 18
  • Jackson Browne – September 12

If you prefer not to pack your own picnic, before each show dine at Ovations Restaurant in the park (reservations recommended) or stop by Picnics by Capital Restaurant Concepts and select a to-go picnic or just purchase food from one of the concession stands.
