Get in Shape for a Chicago-Style Summer

Have the cold, dark days of Chicago’s winter left you feeling a little pudgy and out-of-shape? Have you been spending too much time on the couch lately watching the Blackhawks in the playoffs? Well, fear not. Even with summer just around the corner, it’s not too late to get in shape and get bikini-ready for such iconic Chicago summer hotspots such as North Avenue Beach.

Thanks to CHEW Chicago Inc. (which stands for Complete Health Education & Wellness) getting in shape this year can be easier than ever.

In May, CHEW is launching its “8 Weeks to a Personal Revolution” program at the  Human Performance Institute (HPI)  (1806 W. Cuyler; map it). Cost is $499 and includes eight weeks of personal training sessions (two times per week) and nutritional counseling with CHEW’s owner, Jessica Marie, a Holistic Nutrition Practitioner (once a week). The personal training sessions will be with HPI’s trainers.

The program, which starts May 11, will also include:

- Weekly nutrition worksheets and information.
- The CHEW Detox Meal Plan.
- Weekly motivational e-mails with nutrition tips and recipes.
- The CHEW Chicago Newsletter.
- Unlimited e-mail support.
- And an optional discounted two-month membership to HPI.

Participants can choose to do their personal training sessions either on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. or Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. The program is a small group-format with eight to 10 participants. Nutritional counseling with Jessica will take place weekly after one of the personal training sessions and will last about 30 minutes.

Bonus nutrition tips: I recently meet with Jessica, owner of CHEW, and walked away with some really powerful nutrition advice. As Jessica says, “Eighty percent of your body’s composition is directly related to your diet,” which means that in order to lose weight, get in shape, and be healthy you need to put as much energy and focus into your nutrition as you do your workouts.

Some of the tips Jessica offered that really impressed me included:

- Getting fresh, organic fruits and vegetables delivered right to your doorstep from New Leaf Natural Grocery.
- Enjoying “pasta” without the carbs and calories with Miracle Noodles.
- Eating affordable raw foods at Cousin’s Incredible Vitality, which also offers detox programs and at-home delivery of raw-food meals.

Jessica also told me about these “healthy” Web sites and blogs:
