15 Mother’s Day Ideas: Houston

houston, texas, flower, mothers dayIt’s almost Mother’s Day and if you have yet to plan anything special for your mother…you’re in trouble!  I am here to give you a hand; here are fifteen things to do with (or for) your mommy in Houston on May 9.

Shopping

The Galleria (map)

The biggest mall in Houston, the Galleria has everything from Dillard’s to Macy’s to Neiman’s, not to mention high-end shopping like Fendi, Versace, and Tiffany’s.  If you are visiting our fair city you can stay at the hotel in the mall, the Westin Galleria.  The mall has several excellent restaurants to chose from when you need to refuel for the next round of stores.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 AM-9 PM; Sunday 11 AM-7 PM (store hours may vary).

Price Point: Department stores, boutiques, national chains, and luxury brands are represented at the Galleria.

Chelsea Outlets (map) & The Outlets at Conroe (map)

If you’re a bargain hunter like I am head to The Outlets at Conroe or Chelsea Outlets in Cypress.  Spend a little quality time with mom on a mini-road trip and then shop til you drop.

Chelsea Outlet Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 AM-9PM; Sunday 11 AM-7 PM.

The Outlets at Conroe Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 AM-8PM; Sunday 11 AM-6PM.

Price Point: Bargain shoppers dream-come-true!

Food

Breakfast/Brunch: Black Walnut Cafe (map)

Everyone talks about how great the food is at the Black Walnut and it’s because the food is great!  I am a wholly unoriginal bruncher (Benedict, please!) but the offerings at the Black Walnut have me straying from my usuals to try things like Berries & Chantilly Cream and breakfast Burrito Combo plates.

Hours: Sunday-Thursday 7 AM-10 PM; Friday & Saturday 7 AM-12AM.

Price Point: Breakfast plates range from $7 to $12.

Lunch: Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen Restaurant (map)

This New Yorker jumped for joy when she found this deli smack in the middle of Houston, TX.  The word schmear is on the menu – need I say more?  My favorite sandwich so far is the Luck Be A Latke – brisket between two potato pancakes with apple sauce (I recommend adding sour cream).  Mom will dig the old-school ambiance and you can brag that Kenny & Ziggy’s was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Hours: Monday-Friday 7 AM-9 PM; Saturday & Sunday 8 AM-9PM.

Price Point: Sandwiches range from $10-$18 – but they are HUGE, so the value is high.

Dinner: Sullivan’s Steakhouse (map)

The first time I ate at a Sullivan’s Steakhouse was in Anchorage, AK.  Every time I see one I am ready to go in, sit down and be pampered.  Mom will love the attentive waiters and the knowledgeable sommelier, who will guide you through the menu and help you pick the perfect meal.  Their iceberg wedge salad with blue cheese is divine.

Mother’s Day Hours: 11 AM-9 PM

Price Point: Luxury, a la carte steakhouse.  And worth every penny in my opinion.

Spas

A spa visit is always a solid choice for Mom on her special day.  Up the wow factor by making it a mother/daughter day or, if mom is short on daughters and long on sons, treat her and her best friend to a day at the spa.  My three top choices at the moment are:

The Spa at Cinco Ranch (map); Hours: Monday-Friday 9 AM-7 PM; Saturday 9 AM-5 PM.  Price point: Spa packages start at $100.

Hawaiian Retreat Day Spa (map); Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-6 PM.  Price point: Spa packages start at $210.

The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa (map); Hours: Monday-Friday 9 AM-8 PM, Saturday & Sunday 9 AM-6 PM.  Price point: Spa packages start at $155.

Outdoors

If your mom would rather pack a picnic lunch and spend a day in the fresh air there are many options in and around Houston.  Beautiful parks are one of the things I love best about this city and luckily for us, they are abundant.

Buffalo Bayou (map)

Hiking, kayaking, canoeing, boat tours, or just a little R&R under the sun – all right in the middle of Houston.  Buffalo Bayou is just a hop, skip and a jump from the Galleria if you want to spoil Mom rotten.

Sam Houston National Forest (map)

Another great day trip from Houston, Sam Houston National Forest is under an hour’s drive from the city.  I recommend the Big Creek Scenic Area as the background for your Mother’s Day photo-op.  Hours depend on intended use (camping, hiking, recreation, etc.)

Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge (map)

Just an hour and a half outside of Houston, how do you resist a name like “Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge”?  The name is funny but the mission is serious: protecting the once-abundant, now-endangered prairie chicken.  The NWR is about an hour west of Houston and will provide spectacular wildlife and wildflower sightings, especially in spring and early summer – absolutely perfect for Mother’s Day.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset

Arts & Entertainment

Could mom use a little music in her life?  A little drama?  Houston is serving up both on Mother’s Day.

Houston Symphony (map): Handel’s Water Music

The world-class Houston Symphony is presenting this beautiful piece as a Mother’s Day matinee.  Pair the performance with brunch or an early dinner for extra brownie points.

When: Sunday May 9, 2:30 PM; $25-$94

Alley Theatre (map): Harvey

Have you ever seen Harvey?  It is a hilarious show and better yet, family-friendly so the whole crew can tag along.  I love a storyline that includes a six-foot invisible rabbit.  Mother’s Day is the final day to see this production in Houston.

When: Sunday May 9; 2 PM ($45-75) & 7:30 PM ($21)

Houston House of Blues (map): Gilberto Santa Rosa & Oscar D’Leon

They call Gilberto Santa Rosa “The Gentleman of Salsa” and I call his show a fun and unique choice for Mother’s Day.  If you’ve done dinner-and-a-movie to death, it might be time to shake things up…and what better place for that than on the dance floor?

When: Sunday May 9; $45 general admission
