Cheap Sleep at Schiphol Airport

Etap Hotel, part of the Accor Hotel Group comes into the budget bracket and is the cheapest option of a hotel close to Schiphol Airport. A courtesy shuttle bus whisks travellers to and from the airport between 4.30 am and 1.30 am. The airport – hotel stretch takes 10 minutes, the hotel – airport journey 15 to 20 minutes.

The rooms are basic and very small, all furnished with Ikea type furniture. Entry to the room is via a six digit PIN code. Each room has a narrow double bed and a single bunk bed above it. Double glazing shuts out most of the noise of incoming and departing planes. No tea or coffee making facilities, but you will be entertained by TV programmes, BBC World and other international channels besides the Dutch ones. The tiny washbasin, toilet and shower cabin are exactly the right size for one of Snow White’s dwarves. This is no exageration.

At €59 the hotel is a bargain. Breakfast (€7) not included in the room rate is unlimited coffee, tea, toast, jam, bread, cheese and chocolate sprinkles (the ultimate Dutch breakfast treat). Vending machines in the entrance-cum-reception area serve tea, coffee and cold drinks including Heineken and a choice of sweets, biscuits and chocolate.

The hotel is located at a stone’s throw from the airport on an island in between motorways. There is no street, no shops no houses but it is next to Ibis Hotel which has a restaurant and bar.
