Red or White? Ely Wine Bar in Dublin
Dublin is a city full of pubs and great places to grab a pint of Guinness. But what if you’re in the mood for something on the lighter side, or you’d prefer softer background music to live guitar? The answer is Ely Winebar. Located right in the center of the city, Ely is a haven from all the other louder watering holes.
When I first discovered Ely I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it before. I had walked past its Georgian exterior many times and never noticed the restaurant and wine bar inside. Only a small sign with the word ‘Ely’ will let you know you’ve arrived at this wine bar. A friend first brought me here for lunch, and I was impressed by the daily specials, juicy burgers, and wines by the glass.
Just like any good wine bar, there is also a section reserved just for sipping wine and sampling appetizers. Ely has a great wine list by the glass or by the bottle. If you’re looking to splurge, Ely has plenty of bottles from top Chateaux in Bordeaux and beyond. During a recent visit, I saw an ad for ‘15% off any Bordeaux bottle of €150 or more.’ If you’re looking for a place to have a special meal, Ely has a great wine list, atmosphere, and food.
You don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy the atmosphere of Ely. Drop in for happy hour and enjoy their bar bites menu and a couple glasses of wine. From an Irish cheeseboard to an antipasto plate, the bar bites are great accompaniments to different wines. They also make a great cappuccino, which is something to be said in a city of tea drinkers.
Ely also offers a great value early bird menu. If you’re willing to eat between 5.00pm and 7.30pm, you can enjoy a 3-course menu for €28.50. Don’t skip the apple and berry crumble for dessert – it’s divine. Ely is a great place to sample new wines, so go ahead and ask your bartender for a recommendation.
