Explore Zurich’s Medieval Past at Baur au Lac

Many people assume that there is nothing glamorous in learning about history but Switzerland’s Baur au Lac hotel has found a way to change that.  The city of Zurich holds an annual spring festival to mark the end of winter every April and, while it is a fun time for everyone, it’s also a long-held tradition.

The festival includes a parade, medieval costumes and a ceremonial burning of a “snowman” which is reminiscent of

Sechseläuten which dates back to the 14th century.  Bells would be rung at 6pm during the spring and summer to mark the end of the workday but the custom has been adapted to commemorates the end of the harsh winter and the beginning of spring.

The Baur au Lac’s Sechseläuten package is being offered from April 16-April 20, 2010, with rates starting from approximately $668 for single occupancy and $1,082 for double occupancy.  The deal includes:

  • One night’s accommodation
  • 5-course dinner in the newly renovated Pavillion restaurant
  • Fresh fruit and homemade sweets from the hotel’s in-house chocolatier upon arrival
  • Unlimited use of the rooftop fitness club
  • VAT and service charges
