Best trips for summer fun in the Rockies

As a child, I spent many summers camping in the Canadian Rockies – and learned there’s a lot more to these mountains than world-class skiing. While the Rockies are synonymous with ski vacations, it’s pretty hard to beat hiking through fields of wildflowers past pristine glacial lakes.

One company, best known as a heli-skiing operation, is making the most of its summer downtime with a number of weekend getaways and adventure trips for the warmer months. Over the past couple of years, Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) has launched zip-lining, rope courses and yoga getaways in the Bobbie Burns and Bugaboo ranges in British Columbia, Canada. Of course, you could always hitch a Boler trailer to the back of your station wagon, but here are a few other options for the 2010 summer season:

Stretch & Stir Cooking Workshop – Sisters Sandra Davis and Julie Sagan mix yoga, cooking and heli-hiking in the Bugaboos. Chef Sandra Davis owns a catering business, The Saucy Gourmet, while her sister Julie Sagan is a yoga instructor with the Bikram Yoga West Edmonton Studio.
When: Aug. 20-23

Painting Workshop with Liz Wiltzen – Liz combines 10 years of guiding experience in the Bugaboos with 20 years of painting, so this getaway combines action (hiking in the Bugaboos) with creativity (painting the Bugaboos).
When: Aug. 31-Sept. 5

reTREAT Yourself – Co-presented by Look Good Feel Better, this retreat is designed for cancer survivors and includes daily meditative yoga sessions, hiking and artistic workshops, including soapstone bear carving and beadwork.
When: Aug. 8-11

Expeditions with world-renowned Canadian explorers, Dr. Joe MacInnis and Dr. Roberta Bondar – Dr. MacInnis, who will lead an expedition in the Bobbie Burns range, is a best-selling author and conservationist who led the first team of scientists to dive under the North Pole. Dr. Bondar, who will lead an expedition in the Bugaboos, is Canada’s first female astronaut and the world’s first neurologist in space.
When: July 24-27 (with Dr. MacInnis)
When: Aug. 17-20 (with Dr. Bondar)

Trips are priced from $2,490 (Cdn) per person for a three-night getaway, based on double occupancy.
