Weekend Roundup: April 15-18

downtown houstonHere are my top picks for what to do in Houston this weekend, April 15-18.¬† What’s on my plate?¬† Friday is still¬†up in the air, Saturday is a tour of St. Arnold Brewery, and Sunday is a super-secret mission related to Operation Bluebonnet.¬† Tonight I’ll be attending the 2010 Mayor’s Gala fundraiser that kicks of the Houston International Festival (iFest); I’ll bring you more information about iFest before the weekend is out!

Thursday April 15

  • Buffalo Bayou Foodie Floats: Tonight kicks off three Thursdays of Buffalo Bayou Foodie Floats.¬† A $50 ticket earns you a 90-minute boat ride and food from some of Houston’s finest chefs.¬† The cruises are limited to 20 people, so act fast!¬†¬†¬†Time: 6 – 7:30 PM; Tickets: $50/each; Location: Launch from Sabine Promenade (map 1) (map 2)
  • Bonobo with Special Guest Yppah at¬†Warehouse Live: The Warehouse is an ultra-cool, 20s-era warehouse that now serves as an event and concert venue just off of downtown Houston.¬† Bonobo is a British DJ/musician/producer with a penchant for percussion; Yppah is a Texas-born electronic/rock musician.¬† I’m not sure what’s cooler – the acts or the venue!¬† Time:¬†Doors open at 8 PM, show begins at 9 PM; Tickets: $10/each; Location: 813 St. Emanuel St. (map)

Friday April 16

  • Cats at the Miller Outdoor Theatre: I’ll refer you to the Miller again and again.¬† The quality of show is outstanding on its own, but when you consider that this theater is always free to the public you get an idea of what a treasure the theater is for Houstonians and visitors.¬† This production is through Houston’s own¬†HITS Theatre and will feature an all-youth cast.¬† Time:¬†8 PM; Tickets: n/a; Location: Miller Outdoor¬†Theatre (map)
  • Dinner & A Movie at The Woodlands Recreation Center: Dinner and a movie – outside!¬† Drive against the traffic and head to The Woodlands Waterway Square for a free outdoor show.¬† Time: 7 PM; Tickets: Free, or $15 to reserve a table (call 281.210.3950 for more information); Location: Waterway Square (map)

Saturday April 17

  • Michael Franks at House of Blues Houston: Who is Michael Franks?¬†¬†Smooth jazz, Man Who Gave Us “Popsicle Toes”?¬† If you don’t know who he is, get thee to iTunes!¬† This is going to be a great show.¬† Time: Doors at 8 PM, show at 9 PM; Tickets: $20-$75; Location: 1204 Caroline St. (map)

Sunday April 18

  • Breakfast recommendation: House of Pies (Westheimer or Kirby)
  • Brunch recommendation: The Grove (map)
  • Hair-of-the-dog recommendation: Mugsy’s (map) – Their Bloody Mary has made every “Best Houston Bloody Mary” mix I’ve seen (and with good reason)!
