Hitting the Links

If you’re like me, you are sitting inside on a beautiful day watching the Masters!  In my defense I did run a charity 5k this morning so I don’t feel too guilty about spending the day on my couch, polishing my own clubs.  In honor of The Men In Green Jackets I am listing my top golf course picks fore! the greater Houston area.

Redstone Golf Club

I’ve covered this course before, in my Shell Houston Open post, but it can’t hurt to revisit this one.  Redstone boasts two courses, Tournament and Member;  as one of only 11 public PGA-approved courses, it’s a unique opportunity for us lovers of golf to play a professional course.  Only the Tournament course is open to the public.

Tools: Green fees

Price point: Luxury

Tour 18

A friend clued me in to Tour 18 before we even got to Houston.  Each hole is an exact replica of another, from some of the most famous courses in the world: Hilton Head, Pinehurst, Augusta, and Sawgrass to name a few.

Where: 3102 FM 1960 East, Humble, TX (map)

Tools: Online booking

Price point: Luxury

Woodforest

Woodforest in The Woodlands is a 27-hole, Steve Elkinington Championship designed course.  On their website Woodforest quotes K.J. Choi praising their greens as the “best in Houston.”  I’ll take that recommend.

Where: 1199 Fish Creek Thoroughfare, Montgomery, TX (map)

Tools: Prices and reservations

Price point: Spendy but affordable; what I would consider an easily-justifiable vacation upgrade.

Country Place Golf Club

Sometimes our traveling companions aren’t as excited at the prospect of a day on the course as we are.  If you want to play but are unable to take a whole day to linger on the links try the Country Place Golf Club; their website states that most foursomes finish in less than four hours.  Country Place is a semi-private club where memberships are available, but day-players are welcome.

Where: 3123 Flower Field Lane, Pearland, TX (map)

Tools: Fees & Rates

Price point: Hits the vacation sweet spot – a little extra without breaking the bank.

Bonus: You can choose to play nine on this course if you are really in a time-crunch.

Houston National Golf Club

Houston National is a 27-hole golf course.  Players can choose from one of three, 18-hole combinations which adds an element of fun right from the start.  Houston National is also semi-private, with available memberships or single-day rates to choose from.

Where: 165000 Houston National Blvd., Houston, TX (map)

Tools: Rates

Price point: Hits the vacation sweet spot – a little extra without breaking the bank.  In addition to a reduced day rate for Juniors and Seniors, Houston National also offers a “Ladies” discount for pre-twighlight golf Monday-Thursday.

Hermann Park Golf Course

I golfed the best nine holes of my entire life at Hermann Park a few weeks ago.  My best nine holes is still pretty embarrassing but I enjoyed myself and that’s what matters.  I was impressed with this course’s beautiful greens and the variety of active wildlife was delightful: egrets, herons, ducks, and turtles abound.
