Dublin Splurge: 5-Star Hotels

Dublin is a great city to blow your budget. Gourmet restaurants, theater, concerts, wine bars, spas, and luxury hotels are all temptations during any visit to the Irish capital. I must say, in my experience, Dublin 5-star hotels are really something special – and worth the price tag.

For a 5-star vacation, I’d recommend a few days in the city and a few days in the country. The west of Ireland is full of wild landscapes, cliffs, and 5-star castles that all lure travelers away from Dublin. However, there’s one 5-star escape located just 30 minutes outside of Dublin that provides all the fresh air and opportunities for hiking and biking without the need to drive for a few hours to the opposite coast.

Here are my recommendations for the top three 5-star hotels in and around Dublin:

1. The Shelbourne: You can’t beat this classic location right on St Stephens Green. Every attraction, restaurant, and shopping district will be within in a quick 20 minute walk from this central location. A bustling bar in the front of the hotel is a great place for a pint of Guinness and some people watching. Don’t miss the afternoon tea – it’s Irish tradition.

2. The Merrion: A slightly less grand exterior but equally spectacular 5-star hotel is the Merrion. With a Michelin-rated restaurant, back terrace, and spa – The Merrion is a great choice for travelers who like their luxury a bit more understated. The location is equally central, and staff are known for their personal touch.

Address: Upper Merrion Street, Dublin 2. (map)

3. The Ritz Carlton Powerscourt: This 5-star option is outside of Dublin City Centre, 30-minutes south in the Powerscourt Estate of County Wicklow. It has a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, massive ESPA Spa, and close proximity to every imaginable outdoor activity. The concierge will provide maps and a picnic for a river walk, complimentary bicycle, and you can even climb the nearby Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Address: Powerscourt Estate, Enniskerry. (map)

Consult the websites of each hotel for in-season packages and deals that might just convince you to splurge on Dublin hotels. With extra amenities, upgrades, and packages – the current economic situation has made luxury hotels even better value for travelers.
