Holy Week Celebrations in Madrid

Last week, I gave a prelude to the Easter celebrations in Madrid, highlighting the best processions to catch around the city. Now that the Holy Week has started, the entire country is decked out in a festive mood – albeit somber but still a swinging one. As promised, here are more activities and celebrations to revel in this week.

Concert Cycles

Through out this week, religious music concerts are organized all over Madrid. Before the processions start, many flock to landmark churches and basilicas to listen to choirs and orchestras performing age-old hymns. It is often a tradition during Holy Week for families to gather around, enjoy some Easter snacks and then head off to the church together.

The three main concert cycles for this year are the Requiem, Voices for Liturgy and Music for the Passion. In total, there are over 20 concerts starting from 20March to 4 April. Entry is free, but get there early to reserve a seat.

The most important churches famous for their religious music concerts are the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro and the Basílica de Nuestro Padre Jesús de Medinaceli.

The last concert, Tamborrada, will take place on 4th April 12pm. An instrumental band from Aragón will be parading from Monasterio de las Jeronimas del Corpus Cristi along Calle Sacramento to Plaza Mayor. This marks the end of the Holy Week, when Jesus Christ resurrects and the people celebrate with joyous druming and music.

Holy Week Foods

Whether it’s a religious or worldwide festival, Spain often celebrates with unique gastronomy. Similarly, the Holy Week is marked by typical dishes prepared only during this period of the year. Evidently, these foods are associated with religious tasks and age-old traditions.

  • A must-try during this season is the torrijas – a dulce (sweet dessert) prepared by dipping bread into from bread in milk and cinnamon, and then deep-frying it before sprinkling a sugar coating over it.
  • Madrid’s local favourite: potaje de garbanzos a la madrileña is a thick and rich chickpea stew available only in April, the holy month of the year.
  • Fried cod croquettes or croquetas de bacalao also win the hearts of many duringHoly Week.
