A Soulful Evening with Michael McDonald

If you need a great distraction from paying taxes, on April 15th, Michael McDonald will be playing at The Birchmere in nearby Alexandria, Virginia.

Michael McDonald McDonalds deep and distinctive soulful voice led him to sing with superstar rock bands Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers when both bands were at the pinnacle of their popularity the 1970s and 80s.  Then in 1982, McDonald launched a solo career that has landed the singer two Grammy Awards and a series of top pop, R&B and soul  hits.

He’s even recorded a parody song, “Eyes Of A Child,” for the “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” movie soundtrack album.

Yet his most well-known tunes include cuts from “Takin’ it to the Street’ (the album’s title) and “It Keeps You Runnin’” both recorded while singing for the Doobie Brothers.  He also co –wrote “What a Fool Believes” with Kenny Loggins, which helped the Doobies “Minute by Minute” album sell over 3 million copies and win 4 Grammys in 1979.

In 1981, after the Doobie Brothers concluded their farewell concert tour, Michael focuses on his solo career and earned another Grammy nomination for his #4 hit, “I Keep Forgettin.’”  And over the next decade, he recorded with the likes of Joni Mitchell, Kenny Loggins and Patti LaBelle, among others.

In 2002, his album “Motown,” a collection of classic Motown hits including “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” went Platinum to critical acclaim. His rich voce captured the soulful sounds of the 1960s Motown catalogue.

I’ve seen Michael McDonald live at Wolftrap and he puts on a great show. The more intimate setting of The Birchmere should make this one-night show even more enjoyable.
