Best New Place in Scotland: Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh
The annual Civic Trust Awards have announced their latest winners, and Scotland has bagged two winning establishments. Besting other noteworthy entries such as the new University of Edinburgh Informatics Centre also in Edinburgh, the Missoni was noted for its “high quality” design, even though the build has remained a controversial addition to the Royal Mile.
The awarding judge noted:
“Hotel Missoni is a successful and contextual contemporary project with high quality access and inclusive design. The prominent site includes two A-listed buildings which have been sensitively restored and used as functioning rooms of the hotel. These rooms not only provide a beautiful environment for the visitors but retain significant aspects of the history of the buildings and culture of that time.”
The hotel has also been nominated for both a Scottish Style Award and the Andrew Doolan Award, Scotland’s most prominent architectural award.
As you may have previously read, I’m not a huge fan of the Missoni. The interiors are fun and funky, but perhaps I just can’t get past the cheese factor of putting in a Pizza Express on the ground floor. That aside, you can’t disagree that the Missoni offers a new luxury option in a great location as it is literally steps from the Royal Mile. It’s a steep walk from the Airport bus, so assuming you can afford the rates here you can afford the taxi to get you here.
You Don’t Have to Spend the Night
You don’t have to spend the night at the Hotel Missoni to enjoy it. There’s Cucina, an Italian kitchen which has a fantastic wine cellar, as well as the ultra-mod-luxury-fabulous Bar Missoni, which is the perfect place for a pre dinner cocktail.
