Dublin Restaurant Week is Back!

Who can argue with a 3-course meal for a fixed price? The formula for restaurant week guarantees success for everybody involved – and ‘Dine in Dublin’ is no exception. Twice a year some of the most interesting restaurants in town create a 25 or 30 euro dinner menu that draws big crowds. Last March I took a 9.30pm reservation on a Tuesday just to try the discounted menu at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse.

Each March and again in the fall, a new list of restaurants is published on the Dine in Dublin website. There are old favorites, some restaurants you wouldn’t want to pay 30 euro for a 3 course dinner, and some new surprises. If you’re stuck in a dining rut, sticking to those classics within walking distance, it’s a great chance to hop in a cab and try something new.

Last fall we booked a large table for Bijou Restaurant in a neighborhood called Rathgar. They easily accommodated all 10 of us, and before our table was ready we had a drink out on the heated balcony. Like most other restaurants, there were only 2 or 3 choices for each course, but the options were tempting. I had a pumpkin ravioli with candied walnuts I still remember over 6 months later.

Tonight I have a reservation at the popular city center eatery, Fallon & Byrne. They have a fantastic food hall, complete with fresh produce, and a lovely wine cellar serving tapas and cheese and warm, crusty bread they bake all day. The wine cellar is so cozy that I’ve never ventured to book a table at the restaurant upstairs. Tonight, I get to see what the chef has up his sleeve for only 30 euro for 3 courses. I’ll report back and let you know if he impresses.

If you’re in Dublin and looking for a place to grab some picnic supplies – look no further than Fallon & Byrne. Salads, sandwiches, soups, fresh pastries – they have everything you need to stroll over to St Stephen’s Green and soak up the spring sun.
