Wintertime in Niagara Falls
Many people probably put Niagara very low on their places to travel during the wintertime, and it
makes sense, as the weather here can get particularly unpleasant at times during the winter months. But what a lot of people don’t know is that visiting Niagara Falls in the wintertime can be a wonderful experience, as the Falls is at its most spectacular.
Wintertime not only has less crowds, but prices are also cheaper, and there are many festivals and attractions open with the winter weather in mind.
The fine mist that constantly blows off the Falls and covers everything, freezes in the wintertime, making it look as though you are walking through a winter wonderland. Lamp posts, benches, trees: everything starts to glitter a little bit. The Falls itself freezes partially, and is also illuminated nightly, making for a beautiful scene. Every Friday in the winter, the Niagara Parks Commission does a fireworks display over the Falls, which you can watch from street level or from one of the many restaurants or hotels overlooking the Falls.
The Winter Festival of Lights is a tradition that dates back as far as I can remember. Lights illuminate the Niagara Parkway, showing scenes from Disney movies, Christmas villages, moving animals and more. Spots to pullover are all along the route, so you are able to get out and take pictures. Even more enjoyable may be getting a cup of hot chocolate and either walking some of the route, or taking a horse and buggy ride along it. Over 3 million little lights and 120 animated light displays make this a festival that you should definitely check out if you are in the area from November to January.
A new attraction, The Rink on the Brink, was added in 2010 to Niagara Falls arsenal of things to do.
You can rent skates there, or bring your own, and skate the night away with a beautiful view right at the edge of Niagara Falls.
Seen as wintertime is the off season for Niagara Falls, discounts can be found on everything from hotels to attractions. It should be noted that some attractions are not open in the wintertime though, such as Maid of the Mist and the Spanish Aero Car.
Personally, winter is my favourite season to visit the Falls. There is not a huge crowd of people and you often get the view all to yourself. I love the way ice covers everything and makes it look so magical.
If you find yourself in Ontario during the winter months, definitely make time for a little trip to Niagara, you won’t regret it!
