What’s In A Shoe?

Depending on where you are in the world, foot ware can say a lot about a person. Color, fabric, fit and style all play a role in the way people are grouped and classified within society.

In Buddhist nations for example, it is expected that all people will remove their shoes before entering a temple. In norther Burma, a flip-flop that just just barely fits (in western eyes) is a proper fit. If it were any bigger, people would be think that you were too poor to buy your own and had to wear some one’s hand me downs. In India, it is normal for construction workers to wear flip-flops while school children wear over-sized dress shoes.

And then of course there are many people who have no shoes at all; many because they cannot afford them and others because they are fulfilling a religious duty or taking a pilgrimage for example. Who knew that all this could exist in a simple shoe?
