Dahlias for Haiti
There are lots of Seattle businesses involved in raising funds and other humanitarian efforts for people in Haiti, and local design company, Laura Bee, has jumped into fundraising efforts with flowers.
Laura Bee Designs creates custom bags and accessories in their studio and and shop in Ballard. You can stop by and take a look at the collection of fabrics, trims, and special touches, working with them to create an item that is uniquely you. You’ll find these creations as stylish as they are functional.
It’s with that same sense of care and detail, that Laura Bee launched their Dahlias for Haiti campaign, creating colorful and beautiful dahlia pins. They’re made out of 100% recycled felt, and provide a fun splash of color for a gray Seattle winter. All but $2 of the purchase price (used to cover shipping and credit card fees) of the dahlia will be donated to Mercy Corps, a Northwest-based relief organization currently doing work in Haiti. All labor, materials, and design are being donated. Originally, it was hoped that 200 dahlias could be sold, but at last check over 531 dahlias were sold, raising over $5,000!
The dahlia pins are still on sale through February 14th, and would make a terrific Valentine gift. They come in a choice of colors: charcoal gray, red, fuchsia, orange, deep purple, and turquoise, and are topped off with a vintage button and a card. I ordered one in fuchsia!
Because of the demand, a shipping schedule has been set up, with dahlias order now being delivered between February 14-24th. These handmade flowers will be worth the wait!
Location: 6418 20th Avenue NW, Ballard (map)
Price: $12, credit cards, PayPal or cash (if you visit the store) only. $10 will go to Mercy Corps. Order online or at the Ballard store.

Thank you so much for writing up our fundraiser. As of today, we’ve sold 630 dahlias! We have a fresh batch available in our store, and are shipping within one week of order now.
Thanks again!
It’s such a worthwhile cause that I had to order one and write about it. I’m so happy that it’s been such a big success. Next time I’m in Ballard, I’ll stop by the studio to check out all the other lovely things you make.
