Top Notch Italian Fusion Food at Gemelli
On the top of the stairs of the corner of S. Bento and R. Nova da Piedade (map), Augusto Gemelli creates his daily delicacies for his clients. His restaurant, Gemelli, and himself have been consistently on the top of Lisbon restaurant and chef lists.
We are walked into a table with a wide window view over São Bento Street. The atmosphere is relaxed and the decoration is simple, but modern and elegant. The right place to relax over a true gastronomic experience.
The Italian chef’s creations are based on the simplicity of Italian dishes with obvious influences from his travels around the world. Still, Gemelli likes his gastronomy to be just his own. And, in fact, this restaurant has its proper ideal of serving above all degustation menus, changing every day according to what’s available at the market. Today, you can choose between 4, 5 and 7 courses menus.
We went for the 4 courses menu (€32) and added a much recommended Baco menu (€15), meaning a wine service with a different wine for each dish. As it would be expected with an Italian chef, we were first given superb, warm artisanal bread with yummi Parmiggano cheese. Extra virgin oil with a few drops of Basil vinegar was poured into a little white saucer to make the perfect combination of tastes with our bread and Parmiggano. Soon came the first dish, a potato soup with cod fish and truffles, followed by a Spicy tomato “fettuccine” with steamed grouper and black truffle, mushroom sauce. The second main dish was a simple, yet brilliant Shrimp Risotto. Our meal finished with a Chocolate Fondant with manderine ice-cream.
While leaving, we were pleased we finally got to know this Lisbon favourite. Knowing that we will eventually go back.
At lunch, Gemelli restaurant serves Gourmet Express Menus with a starter, main and dessert for €20, including water, coffee and a glass of wine. The idea is to make it an exceptional break from work.
