The ReBirth Of The Hotel Restaurant

As you know I was recently in Montreal.  On my second night there, I had dinner plans to go out with a colleague however my post surgery knee was killing me and it was REALLY cold.  So, we decided to try to stay near our hotel if we could.  I was staying at the W Montreal, a fantastic hotel right smack in the middle of town.  In any event we wandered into Otto thinking, how bad could it really be, it’s only one meal.

It used to be that meals in hotels were not only bad but over priced.  It seems to me at some point in the not so distant past this changed.  The meal we had at Otto was excellent.  The service was (once again) tremendous.  The price was nowhere what I feared it would be given that it were in a hotel.  I was really pleasantly surprised.

When I think of eating in hotels the first thing that comes to mind is Las Vegas.  Unless you are off the strip, with the exception of the places like In N Out Burger there aren’t too many choices to eat that are not in hotels.  If I were traveling to New York city, Los Angeles, Chicago or even if I am at home in Toronto, dinning in a hotel eatery would rarely be an option for a meal.

Am I wrong?  Is this still the case?  In Toronto, from time to time I have eaten at the coffee shop at the Four Seasons hotel.  I have never eaten a meal at any other local hotel, with the rare exception of meeting someone from up north at the Prince hotel.  For example, I wouldn’t ever say to some friends let’s go grab a bite to eat at the Sutton Place.  No knock on the Sutton Place, or any other hotel for that matter.  Is this going to change.  Are the stereotypes of the restaurant going the way of the dodo bird?

More and more great places to eat are starting to pop up in hotels.  They are priced as any other local establishment and not the same as typical room service prices.  The Westin Book Cadilac has a very cool restaurant called Roast that is very good and is out to compete with the other establishments that are in or near the casinos.  Here in Toronto some boutique hotels like the Drake Hotel have fun places to eat too.

So, is this changing?  Am I the only one noticing and liking?  In your town, what’s the best hotel eatery and do the locals eat there too?
