Attention Chocolate Lovers: Chicago’s Best Chocolate Shops

Nothing says I love you like a box of chocolates. And no better time than Valentine’s Day to spoil your significant other (or even yourself) with homemade truffles and other assorted chocolate masterpieces.

Chicago is Bon Bon City and is home to several famous “chocolate shops”  including:

Fannie Mae Candies (343 North Michigan Ave.; map it) – Order heart-shaped boxes of Fannie Mae’s bestsellers including Pixies,  Buttercreams, and Mint Meltaways. (One of my favorite Fannie Mae “assortments” is the Colonial Box with toffees, Pixies, Trinidads, Buttercreams, and crunchy nut clusters.

Vosges (951 W. Armitage; map it) – Popular for its creative and delicious truffles and chocolate bars, including bacon and pepper flavored.

Moonstruck Chocolate Café (320 North Michigan Ave.; map it) – Bestsellers at this Michigan Avenue chocolate house include chocolate-covered pecan clusters; champagne truffles; toffee bites; sea salt, vanilla carmels; pure gold truffles; and wild huckleberry truffles. For Valentine’s Day, Moonstruck is selling hand-dipped and hand-made Love Bug Truffles with flavors such as:

Raspberry Love Bug … extra-bittersweet dark chocolate ganache flavored with real raspberry.

Strawberry Love Bug … extra-bittersweet dark chocolate ganache flavored with real strawberry.

Tip: If you want to go out on a date for a chocolate treat, try the Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop & Soda Fountain (830 N. Michigan Ave.; map it) where you can order (and split with your date) the Earthquake Sundae ($19.02), which comes with enough ice cream (including chocolate flavor) to feed four people. There’s also The Peninsula’s Chocolate Bar (108 E. Superior St.; map it) with its all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet ( $36 per person) every Friday from 8 p.m. – midnight  (Another tip: Save room for The Peninsula’s lavender-scented, white chocolate cocoa. It’s worth every calorie.)

    Lisa,

Fannie Mae’s are my favorite candies in the world! Actually the location that you mention on Michigan Avenue is where I would go almost every day to get my fix. I worked in a nearby building and would sneek out whenever no one was looking. In my opinion, nothing can compare to a Fannie Mae! I’ve also been to the Ghiradelli Chocolate Shop for a chocolate malt or root beer float. Great tips! I need to fly to Chicago to try all these great places!

Hi Heather – Fannie Mae sounds like a great “work break.” What’s your favorite Fannie Mae candy? They still have the store on Michigan Ave. Yummy!

I’m a simple girl. My favorite Fannie Mays are pixies and vanilla buttercreams and only milk chocolate, not dark. I never eat anything that is good for me!

That’s great Heather and good choices – some of my favorites as well.
