Native Hawaiian Plant Sale on Maui
Even if you’re a visitor to the island of Maui, it will be worth your while to stop by the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens this Saturday, January 30, from 9 a.m. – noon. This local organization is dedicated to bringing awareness of native plant species to residents and tourists alike, and this Satruday it is hosting a Native Hawaiian Plant Sale that shouldn’t be missed.
Some of the native plants on sale will be taro, banana, fern, hibiscus, palm, and shade trees. Native growers that are selling these local plants are Ho’olawa Farms, Upcountry Natives, and Maui Eko Compost. Free expert advice on maintaining local plants and upkeep on landscaping will be provided. The Water Department will also be on hand to offer water saving tips and devices for interested parties.
If you live on Maui, this is a great opportunity to do your part to spread the seed of local growing. If you’re just visiting, it is still worth a visit to the Gardens, as the grounds are well-kept and you will be able to learn about Hawaii’s precious native plants from locals who truly care.
The mission of the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is to foster an appreciation and understanding of the living Hawaiian islands of today, emphasizing the plants of Maui Nui (Maui, Moloka’i, Lana’i and Kaho’olawe), and providing a center for environmental education, Hawaiian cultural expression, conservation, biological study, and recreation. They welcome donations and encourage membership.
