In Between: Honolulu’s Best Kept Secret

Nightclub & Bar Magazine recently announced their 2010 Nightclub & Bar Awards finalists. With more than 235 entries for just 14 categories.  Formerly known as the Five Star Awards, the Nightclub & Bar Awards expands on that program’s foundation to honor outstanding operators across the industry from venues large and small.  The judging panel consists of 20 industry leaders, journalists and consultants.

While Hawaii made it into just one category, it was a surprising one.  In-Between, a little known gay-friendly bar in Waikiki, is up for “Small Wonder Bar of the Year,” in contention with three other bars on the mainland.  Having lived here for almost 20 years, this was the first time I heard of In-Between, but when I did some more research on the place, it seems I’ve been deprived of some good old-fashioned karaoke fun.

In-Between is located on a little side street in the middle of Waikiki.  Locals and tourists alike come here for the friendly atmosphere and the supposedly world-class karaoke.  While it is known as a gay bar, the crowd that frequents this place is mixed and really easy going.

In-Between is open all the days of the week. On most of the days, live performances are held, while other days feature a resident DJ. It has a dive-y feel; it is quite small and tends to get crowded.  Every Thursday, a karaoke night is organized at this place and the singers are really supposedly amazing. A good selection of beers are on tap.

Winners of the competition will receive their award at the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show, which takes place March 8 – 10 in Las Vegas. Good luck to In-Between and all the the entrants to the 2010 Nightclub & Bar Awards!
