Markets Easy on the Pockets

“Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping,” once said Bo Derek, an American actress whose beaded and plaited cornrow hairstyle in the film “10″ was widely copied and became eponymous. For locals and tourists in Auckland, here are some of the best places to shop at bargain prices at that:

City Farmers Market

City Designers Market is on its last weekend this 29 and 30 January, from 9.00am to 4.00pm, at the Ellen Melville Hall, corner High Street and Freyberg Place, Auckland Central Business District (CBD).

It’s Auckland’s alternative fashion outlet offering exclusive New Zealand made clothing and jewellery at affordable prices. Shoppers get the opportunity to meet the designers in person, too.

City Farmers Market on 30 Jan, 8:30am-12:30pm, at Britomart, corner Gore & Tyler Streets, Auckland CBD. Local growers, farmers, and artisan food producers sell what they grow, pickle, farm, preserve, smoke, bake, or catch themselves every week: fruit and vegetables, meat, condiments, eggs,  olives and olive oils, cheese, coffee, artisan breads, and a whole lot more that are fresh and high quality.

Shoppers can make purchases and have breakfast or morning tea along the way with fresh coffee and hand-made pastries on site. Parking is available on streets surrounding the market and also in monitored carparks in front of the market site, as well as further along Galway Street.

Auckland City Market

Auckland Anniversary Day Art & Craft Market, 1 February, 10:00am-4:00pm, Selwyn Reserve, 48-56 Tamaki Drive, Mission Bay.

Established in 1996 and has grown to now have 200 art and craft sites from all over the upper part of the North Island, the market is a great place to buy directly from the makers of the products and some imported goods.

Heaps of garden art, mosaics, original paintings, photography, pottery, furniture, fresh food, honey, homemade jams and chutneys, plants,  jewellery, bags, hats, clothing, baby gear and much morecover the length of the park around the iconic fountain in Mission Bay.

Auckland City Market, Saturdays and Sundays, from 5 December till 28 February, 10:00am-6:00pm,  corner Elliot & Victoria Streets, Auckland CBD (behind the bungy on the way to the Sky Tower)

Direct from the crafts people and 100% New Zealand owned businesses  are designer clothing, handmade photo albums, oils, carving, artwork, and jewellery. Plus, freshly squeezed juice, spicy hot food, jungle organic coffee, kiwi pie, artisan bread, and local buskers on the offer while you shop in Auckland’s largest outdoor inner city market.
