Calling All Chocolate Lovers

In its 18th year, the annual two-day Chocolate Lovers Festival in Fairfax, Virginia, just 30 minutes from Washington, DC, brings together lovers of the delicious and decadent treat that was first produced over 3,000 years ago. 

Chocolate spoon Events during the weekend festival, all occurring in Old Town Fairfax, and the weekend before Valentine’s Day (February 6-7, 2010) include:

  • A sweet chocolaty kick-off to the festival on Saturday with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast from 8:00  until 1:00 p.m. at the Fairfax Fire Station #3. (4081 University Drive, Fairfax)  Chocolate chip pancakes with sausage will be available for $6.00 per adult and $4.00 for children.
  • The Chocolate Challenge, an arts extravaganza and contest for professional and amateur chocolatiers, cake designers and sculptors, all using chocolate as their medium, at SPACE ( 3955 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax)  Categories include best in taste, show, design and creativity. Admission is $1.00 for adults.
  • Taste of Chocolate at the Old Town Hall features over a dozen chocolate vendors selling home made candy, cakes, fudge, brownies, ice cream and other delicious chocolate concoctions, perfect to give as Valentine’s Day gifts.  (3999 University Drive, Fairfax – Map It) Admission is free. Sunday, noon – 4:00. No strollers allowed.

  • Cake Decorating Demo at noon at SPACE (see address above) will demonstrate how to make a “lady’s purse” cake, using step-by-step instructions. Admission $1.00 per adult.
  • Craft Show and Bake Sale on Saturday, from 8:00 to 4:00, also at the Fire Station #3, where creative gifts all made by local crafters, along with home-baked goodies will be available for sale.  A with raffle featuring donated prizes concludes the show. 
  • Kid’s Events including chocolate-themed craft making, the Chocolate Caper Mock Trial based on the nursery rhyme to help children learn about the law, child fingerprinting by the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, Chocolate-Covered Fairy Tales story telling, a magic show, and children’s Valentine Day craft making.
  • Free Open Houses and Exhibits all weekend at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center (Map It), the Ford House, the historic one-room Legato School and the Ratcliffe-Allison House.

Check the festival’s schedule and map for specific locations, dates and times.  And try not to go into chocolate overload!!

Dates & Times – February 6-7, 2010 – 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Tickets – Some events require a fee, but most are free.  Strollers will not be permitted in some buildings.

Nearest Metro Subway Station – Vienna/Fairfax-GM, Orange line, then a 2½-mile cab ride or use the CUE Bus to Old Town Fairfax.

Parking – Limited metered street and free parking is available.
